Hyperintelligence & Gaia

The key link Lovelock proposes between Gaia and hyperintelligence is mutual dependency. Electronic superintelligences still need a stable, temperate planet in order to function. They may tolerate different temperature ranges than humans do, but they cannot operate on a Venus-like furnace.

In Lovelock’s argument, that makes Gaia and Hyperintelligence natural allies rather than enemies. The hyperintelligences will quickly realise that unrestrained global heating threatens their own existence. To protect their own interests, they will: - Stabilise the climate more effectively than humans ever could. - Optimise planetary conditions for long-term habitability. - Treat the biosphere as essential infrastructure rather than expendable scenery.

Because the biosphere is the mechanism by which Gaia regulates climate (through forests, oceans, clouds, and biogeochemical cycles), electronic life has a strong incentive to keep a rich, functioning living world. Preserving complex life becomes a rational survival strategy for hyperintelligence.
